Internet Security & Utility Suites

These suites combine multiple features into a single product from one or more vendors. There are tradeoffs in using these products. It is convenient to have several features bundled together. Dealing with one vendor may be easier for upgrades and support. If the parts of a suite have trouble getting along, the vendor may be more likely to fix the problem since it's harder to say that its not their fault. If you have three home computers, a 3 license suite may save you money and reduce the work installing and maintaining your security software. On the other hand, these suites may not have every security and privacy feature that you need or want. A suite may have several strong features mixed with some weaker ones.

Virus Suite Problems

Security suits are very broad in their design because they generally cover five main elements of protection which are:

  1. AntiVirus
  2. AntiSpam
  3. Phishing
  4. Firewalling
  5. AntiSpam

Because of this it is not uncommon to find problems with these suits such as:

  • Network communication problems with other computers
  • Email sending and receiving problems
  • Sites not loading on your web browser
  • Programs freezing

Rectifying the Problems

The best way to go when setting up a chosen suite is to be prepared to drill in (or explore your options) to see what can be turned off e.g.

  • If I am having problems with sending and receiving email, the first thing I look at is the phishing properties to see whether I can first turn it off and then test the email. If the email works then you know what area you should be looking in to solve your problem. Trial and error is the best way by simply switching or lowering security settings etc and test by sending an email until you are happy with your email response
  • If you are having further problems, you might turn every protection section off, run a test and then turn on each component one-by-one testing each time until you find where the problem lies.

Conclusion

Systematically turn the whole suite off, running a test then turn each feature on and test until your problem area is found. Preparedness to spend time configuring and testing is the key to successful solving security suite problems.
