AdawareNoUpdate

Problems With Ad-aware-se Definition Update

Error Retrieving Updates. Interrupts At 5% Download Completion

Ad-aware suggests changing the DNS until one was found that would be compatible with theirs however if people like myself like to use OpenDNS this solution is out of the question.

Lavasoft's also suggestion on April 4th, 2007 suggested: "Download a new version of Ad-Aware se" - which works fine but is also out of the question for those who are using Ad-aware Se Professional 6 and do not want to upgrade to ver. 7 as yet.

Fix

Ad-aware update servers are the following

server0=82.99.19.11/public/defs.ref
server1=82.99.19.12/public/defs.ref
server2=82.99.19.13/public/defs.ref
server3=82.99.19.14/public/defs.ref
server4=82.99.19.15/public/defs.ref
server5=82.99.19.16/public/defs.ref
server6=82.99.19.17/public/defs.ref

Browse to my HOSTS file located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS and opened it with notepad. Then add the following line on a new line: [1]

82.99.19.11 download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net

Explanation on How it Works

The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, then Windows checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to override addresses in the DNS which in some instances are having problems with Ad-aware upload.
