TurnOffNaggingSecurityWarningsTable of ContentsHow do I turn off those nagging security reminders in Windows Vista & XP when I have third party software installed? Are you sick of being reminded you have a security problem when you know full well you have covered every avenue by installing all the needed security software (see Security Essentials on how to make your computer secure). If users do not turn on their firewall, anti-virus software in XP and much more in Vista, end users are plagued by these annoying popups and red security shields located in the task bar saying you have a serious security problem. How do you solve this problem, yet still be reminded when your third party software runs out of subscription or is inoperable for whatever reason, without being given false alarms? Comparisons between XP and VistaIn Windows XP SP2, if you were running an antivirus program and that program was turned off or its virus signatures were out-of-date, WSC would alert you to the problem and offer recommendations as to how to fix it. The trouble was that it was up to the user to figure out how to fix the problem, which usually meant figuring out which application to run to fix the issue. Using Vista "security center" with any of your third-party security software, including third-party firewall, antivirus, and antispyware software, WSC will alert you that there is a problem and will provide a button that will link you to the third-party-provided solution that will allow you to easily fix the problem using the third-party's own software. However, if you are happy using a hardware firewall i.e. NAT Router, Vista does not allow users to turn the firewall only notification off without changing the way security centre alerts me as can be seen circled in Figure-1. Lets have a look at how we can configure our computers using XP first, then we will discuss Vista under the next subheading How to stop nagging security reminders in Windows XPFollow these directions: Look to the left hand side, you will see a Resources pane > Click on the Change the way Security Center alerts me. A Window will open with multiple check boxes allowing you to choose what you want to be alerted on. Depending on what software you have installed and what windows security settings you have turned off, check the appropriate boxes. If you don't, Windows Security Center will alert you if any are disabled. That's it! By following these simple steps, you can choose what security item to be notified using Windows XP but what about Vista? How to stop nagging security reminders in Windows VistaThe Security Center was originally introduced with Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista has improved on almost every feature found there. A lot more "under the covers" features have been included for Windows Vista. If any of these safeguards are out of date or in an unsecure state, the Security Center will warn you so that you can make adjustments or changes. [1] Follow these directions: Type "security center" in one of the search boxes from the Start Menu or from the Control Panel and click on the first result. As you can see in Figure 1, the information provided by the Security Center is split into several categories. ImprovementsSome of the other improvements to the Windows Vista Security Center include:
Windows Security Center monitors a larger portion of security factors needed for safe browsing today. The following security components Windows Vista monitors are:
