SpywareInfection

What to do if you Suspect you have Spyware or Malware

Three free industry standard Spyware removers and Virus remover (AVG Free) used in conjunction with one another are very effective for ridding infected computers of viruses and spyware. These are:

  1. Malwarebytes Antisoftware
  2. Adaware SE Personal
  3. Spybot Search and Destroy

You will need to download these programs then:

  • Update
  • Scan
  • Quarantine

Spybot can be set to automatically scan the computer at a daily time, which is recommended. Adaware on the other hand can be set to scan automatically when the computer is started. By configuration to scan and quarantine where possible automatically takes the risk away of having to remember to scan regularly.

A scan might be required more than one time especially if the computer is badly infected. If you have further problems it is time to get a technician in to solve your problem or if you are a little more brave.

Realtime Protection

Spyware Terminator is starting to gain a reasonable reputation for its effective realtime protection. At this point in time it doesn't yet have the effectiveness of Adaware and Spybot combined to remove spyware, however it is worth consideration for the purpose of reatime protection and the fact it is a work in progress which seems to have a good following. It is not for the faint hearted to configure, however it is certainly worth giving it a go. One important thing to remember is that do NOT take the popup message for blocking certain executable files for granted. Make sure your read and comprehend every popup before making a decision, otherwise very shortly you will have a computer that operates only a small portion of your installed programs. If this happens it is just as easy to uninstall and start again this time paying more attention to its popup messages. It also has a tick box remember the action, if you are not sure alway untick this until you are confident of the status of the program (is it a goody or bady?)

A complete realtime Anti-Spyware plus Anti-Virus program that has realtime protection is AVG Free, which is completely free and does a great job.

Spyware Removal Big Guns

If you have tried the above programs and still have suspected hijacking programs lurking, a popular generic spyware/hijacking removal tool used by those with a certain degree of expertise is HijackThis, which scans certain areas of the Windows OS where spyware often resides and presents a list with items to delete manually. As most of the items are legitimate windows files/registry entries it is advised for those who are less knowledgeable to post a HijackThis log on the numerous HijackThis sites and let the experts decide what to delete extreme caution as wrong sited deleted can destroy your whole operating system

Fake anti-spyware programs

Malicious programmers have released a large number of fake anti-spyware programs, and widely distributed Web banner ads now spuriously warn users that their computers have been infected with spyware, directing them to purchase programs which do not actually remove spyware — or worse, may add more spyware of their own.

The recent proliferation of fake or spoofed antivirus products has occasioned some concern. Such products often bill themselves as antispyware, antivirus, or registry cleaners, and sometimes feature popups prompting users to install them. They are called rogue software.
